World Press Photo

The World Press Photo is the world's most important award in photojournalism. The special feature of this competition is the participation of press journalists from all around the world. The competition was hold for the 59th time in 2016. After the winner's image has been elected, in more than 100 cities across 45 countries worldwide touring exhibitions take place.

In the competition for the year 2015, the jury, sponsored by Canon, had to choose the winning photo out of 82,951 submission arriving from 5,775 professional photographers from 128 countries. In addition to the Press Photo of the Year, there are prizes in seven categories. This year's categories were General News, Spot News, Sports, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, People and Nature. In each category, three prizes are handed over for the best single image and three prizes for the best photo series / photostories. The winning picture is remunerated with 10,000 euros. Since the prize is always awarded for submissions concerning relevant events of the previous year, the competition can also be considered as a summary of current world affairs.

For the year 2015, the Australian photographer Warren Richardson received the coveted prize. He photographed a refugee who passes his baby on the border from Serbia to Hungary through the border fence. The recording was taken in the night of August 28th, 2015. Richardson had to take the photo in the moonlight, because otherwise he would have betrayed the refugees wanted by the police.

Frenchman Corentin Fohlen received the second prize in the "Spot News Singles" category for his photo of protesters demonstrating against terrorism in Paris after the attacks on satire magazine Charlie Hebdo. Other awards went to Zhang Lei (1st place in the "Contemporary Issues Singles" category), which is a haunted city in northern China. On the other hand, to the Russian photographer Sergey Ponomarev, who was awarded with the first prize in the category "General News Stories". He photographed the arrival of refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos.
