Cristian Vogel
Pioneer of Electronic Music
From his name one might think that he is German. But he is not. Cristian Vogel is born in Chile. In the late 80s he started with electronic music. At that time, he produced minimal breakbeats. Today one can refer to Cristian Vogel claiming, that he has provided the techno his own style.
As Cristian was two years old his family moved with him to Brighton. As a teenager, he listened to skate punk and played in several bands, but had no success. Through the influence of the Brighton music scene as a source of his inspiration, his interest in programmable music grew. Vogel learns the operation of drum machines and samplers autodidactically hisself.
In 1990 he published his first simple breakbeat track, which could be sold well throughout the edition. Cristian Vogel then enrolled at the University of Brighton for the subject "20th century music". There he was allowed to use the studio that was equipped with bells and whistles. His tutor was Jonathan Harvey, a former student of Karlheinz Stockhausen. At this time, Vogel together with Si Begg operated a small cassette label. Through his growing expertise based on his studies Vogel sent a demo tape to the producer Dave Clarke in 1992. Clarke liked what he heard and allowed Vogel to release two EPs on his "Magnetic North label".
Now the foundation was laid. Vogel´s popularity rose. Additional EPs on "Mille Plateaux" from Frankfurt and countless performances all over Europe followed. In 1994 the Frankfurter guys then released Vogel´s first LP called "Beginning to Understand", and some EPs on "Trope" by Thomas Heckmann. Fascinated by the German club scene, the Chilean visited very often the "Tresor" in Berlin. On the house label of the Tresor the album "Absolute Time" was then released in 1995. In the same year the exceptional DJ founded the label "Mosquito" together with Si Begg, with whom he organized a weekly techno club night in Brighton called "The Box". For the label Mosquito among others Neil Landstrumm was engaged, who produced some very good releases on Tresor Records.
In 1996, the turnaround in Cristian Vogel`s view to Techno started. In his view, there is a lack of flexibility and innovation. He founded the "No Future Organization" to coordinate his activities with those of Si Begg and Neil Landstrumm. In addition, No Future was a platform for cultural activities in Brighton. In 1997 Vogel finally brings off the techno scene. The album "All Music has come to an End" appears.
The unique artist will start his next project with Jamie Lidell. He took Vogel out of his depth. Together, they teamed up as "Super Collider". The project combined techno, funk and singing. The album "Head On" was then considered as one of the best records of the year 1998.
Vogel´s last solo album appeared in 2014 on the Berlin label Shitkatapult. It bears the name "Polyphonic Beings". Meanwhile Cristian Vogel also lives in the techno capital Berlin. He considers the city as a source of inspiration for his music.
