Drawing
All about the art of drawing and geometry.
Opposed to painting, drawing develops a motif in a varying simplified way with lines and strokes. Drawings are created by hand or with tools.
Drawing - a first overview
The early beginnings of drawing go hand in hand with the beginning of human cultural history. Modern drawing is characterized by a maximum freedom in choosing graphical means since the late 19th century. The dividing line between painting and drawing can vary strongly. This is due, for example, to the colour scheme, to the usage of pastels and crayons and to sculptural design of smudging and rubbing. Thus, the uniqueness of the line may be in the background - hatchings may result.
As an independent medium, drawing especially gained importance in popular culture, for example in the context of cartoons and comics. Artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Horst Janssen and Gunter Böhmer provided modern drawing new impetus on their paths. Furthermore, drawings in East Asia have a specific meaning. The so-called ink painting grew out of Chinese calligraphy and developed with the use of brushes and black ink or soot. As drawing techniques brush drawings and washes dominate, for which reason the East Asian ink style is often compared to watercolour. Watercolours are drawn with water-soluble inks.
A drawing emphasizes the lines and contours of the issue represented. As an artistic medium, the line itself is abstract. Abstraction and reduction of visual information to the central contour is a major intellectual achievement. Therefore, the school of drawing is also a school of attentive and careful inspection.
