Opera Carmen sold out! - Opening of the Bregenzer Festspiele 2017
The Bregenzer Festspiele with its unique lake scenery are a highlight every year. The premiere of the opera "Carmen" took place at the Seebühne last week.
The Festival am Bodensee runs from 19th July to 20th August 2017. Eighty events are scheduled for the festival. There are also opera performances, orchestral concerts and theatre performances.
Stage designer Es Devlin designed this stage design. It shows two huge hands with playing cards. The artist is a well-known face in the scene. In addition to numerous stage productions from opera and drama to dance, she also designed spectacular stage shows for international pop artists such as Kanye West, Take That, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. As a stage designer for operas, she has already worked for the major opera houses in the world, in Barcelona, Hamburg, London, Amsterdam, Dresden and New York.
She not only designed a fantastic stage together with the Danish opera director Kasper Holten, the current director of the London Opera House. The backdrop is an impressive piece of architecture and art. Devlin’s stage sets usually disappear after the show. This will stay now for two years.
What is special are the impressive projections that the stage design provides: "Of course we realized that the idea with the playing cards would be ideal for a scenery with projections. These cards will not really move, but the projections will look like as if they were turning around or changing their appearances, and we are going to project something on these cards all night through the evening”, said director Kaspar Holten.
The opening event of "Carmen" was sold out. Altogether, the play will be shown 28th times at the Seebühne. The Viennese Symphoniker, conducted by Paolo Carignani, will accompany the play musically.
